FAMILY MEDICINE

Learning objectives

After completing the course of family medicine student should know:
- competence of family physician and the specificity of his/her work,
- basic preventive measures in general practice in fields of: mandatory and recommended vaccinations for children and adults, cardiovascular prevention, prophylaxis and early detection of selected neoplasmatic diseases
- principles of the diagnosis and therapeutic management consistent with the competence of family care, regarding e.g. infectious diseases in children, respiratory tract infections in children and adults, basic musculoskeletal diseases, thromboembolic venous disease, chronic venous insufficiency, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes and other common issues in internal medicine;
- rules for referring patients to specialists’ consultations,
- principles of communication with the patient and rules of conducting proper medical consultation
Practical skills gained during family medicine course:
- carrying out medical history and physical examination of the adult and the child, at any age;
- carrying out differential diagnosis based on clinical cases discussed;
- making diagnosis and planning treatment – specifically in ambulatory care - in accordance with the recommendations of scientific societies;
- interpretation of laboratory tests, together with understanding the reasons for the deviations;
- qualifying patients for vaccinations;
- properly conducting basic procedures and medical treatments, consistent with the competence of a family physician
- planning specialists’ consultations and establishing treatment plan, including help of a nurse
- monitoring the status of the chronically ill, including bed-ridden patients in long-term care at home


COURSE REGULATIONS:
1. Presence at seminar, training at GP’s practice and workshop is compulsory. Collecting stamps and signatures of persons conducting lectures, after each classes at “internal index”
2. During the 1-week course one can not be absent for any classes, but in serious, justified cases if 1 day of course is missed, it is possible to repeat it with other group.
3. If for unfounded reason a student will leave more than 1 day, he/she will have to repeat whole family medicine course.
4. Assessment of Family Medicine Course: presence at seminar, training days at GP’s practice, workshops.


Conditions for receiving credits:

4. Pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in GP practice according to current guidelines
5. Learning practical skills- catheterization of the bladder in women and men; breast examination; otoscopic examination.
